A picture of Adam's story

Adam Elliott - care and support assistant

Adam says applying for a health and social care apprenticeship with Sanctuary was the best decision he ever made.

Based in Bury St Edmunds at Sanctuary Supported Living’s Hilltop House, which provides care and support for adults with a range of physical disabilities, Adam’s role saw him working closely with tenants, providing support to help them live as independently as possible.

After finishing his GCSEs, Adam found out about the opportunity with Sanctuary while researching apprenticeships online.

He said: “I was still unsure what I wanted to do at this point but an apprenticeship and the opportunity to gain hands-on experience stood out to me.

“I’ve always wanted a career where I felt I was making a real difference and I wanted to see first-hand whether care was as fulfilling as I thought it would be.”

Adam started at Hilltop House in September 2019 and says he enjoyed every moment of his apprenticeship.

He said: “It was an amazing opportunity and I’m so glad I applied. It’s the best decision I ever made.

“The classroom setting wasn’t for me and I believed I would achieve so much more learning practically. I received great support from my tutor and all the staff here, and the management team were always on hand if I needed anything.”

The knowledge that he was making a real difference to people’s lives was the thing Adam valued most about his apprenticeship.

“Making a difference means a lot to me and the job satisfaction was definitely a highlight of my apprenticeship,” he said.

“I enjoyed giving my time to tenants, painting and chatting with them or taking them shopping, it all contributes to building professional relationships.”

Having successfully completed his apprenticeship, Adam has now secured a permanent role at Hilltop House as a care and support assistant.

He said: “Wherever my career takes me, I can see a bright future with Sanctuary that I may not have considered prior to applying for my apprenticeship.

“Learning on the job gave me a huge sense of purpose and I believe the training and experience that I received has and will open doors for me. I cannot recommend apprenticeships highly enough.”
