A picture of Sam's story

Sam Williams – online marketing assistant

Sam was attracted to an apprenticeship with Sanctuary by the opportunity to learn new skills while gaining valuable work experience at the same time.

Having studied film and photography at Edinburgh Napier University, he had always wanted to work in a creative environment.

And in his role as an apprentice digital marketer within the Online Marketing team at Sanctuary, he found exactly what he was looking for.

He said: “Before starting my apprenticeship, my working history had mostly been in the catering industry working in kitchens.

“My apprenticeship allowed me to learn new skills and increase my knowledge as I embarked on a new career. I enjoy the opportunity to explore my creative side, but what I enjoyed most about my apprenticeship was the people I work with.

“Working at Sanctuary is a very different environment than I have been used to, but I feel like with everyone’s help I have settled in very well.”

One of the highlights of Sam’s apprenticeship was the opportunity to support his team with building a brand new website for Sanctuary Care, which was successfully launched at the end of 2019.

He said: “I enjoyed all aspects of my apprenticeship but it was great to have the opportunity to be involved in such a significant project.

“It was very rewarding when the new website launched to be able to see how all the hard work building it had paid off.”

After completing his apprenticeship, Sam has secured a permanent role with Sanctuary as an online marketing assistant. He says he would have no hesitation in recommending the programme to others.

He said: “My apprenticeship gave me the opportunity to move my career in a new direction. Despite having a university degree, when applying for jobs previously it seemed that most companies were looking for experience.

“An apprenticeship lets you gain that experience while learning and developing the skills to help you succeed in your chosen role.

“I received all the support I needed from my team, my apprenticeship buddy and the Learning Academy and I would recommend an apprenticeship with Sanctuary to anyone.”
